St. Patrick's Day

Early in the day, Mrs. Nelson brought some magic leprechaun powder to school.  We added milk and the white powder turned green! (Shh...don't tell...it was really pistachio pudding)

When we returned from lunch, we discovered that a  leprechaun came to our classroom!  He made a terrible mess!  The leprechaun left us pots with gold coins.

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

In the morning, Sprayberry High School seniors came and read to our class.  At lunch time some of us were brave enough to try Green Eggs and Ham!

Class News March 5, 2009

Class News March 5, 2009

Language Arts -   I am so proud of the accomplishments the children have achieved.  Many of them can write 2-3 sentences about a topic or a picture.  A few others are writing more than 3 sentences!  The children are leaving spaces between their words and adding punctuation to the end of their sentences.  Most of the children can read at least 30 words!  All of them are excited about reading and several are asking to take extra books home.  They want to practice reading and show off their new skills to their families.

Math - In February, the children were able to earn paper coins for doing an extra good job while working, being kind to a friend, walking in the hall quietly, or other such daily events.  The children were then able to “spend” their paper coins in our classroom store.  It was a lot of fun and the children practiced counting the pennies and making “fair trades”.  That means trading pennies for nickels and pennies for dimes.  We will do this again in March.  Next week we will begin our unit on Time.  The children will learn about events that occur in the morning, afternoon, and evening.  We will also introduce the vocabulary: sunrise, sunset, and dusk.  Sequencing events is a skill we have practiced and we will continue to practice through the end of the year.

Science - The units we have introduced are: living and nonliving and plants.  We will continue with these units as well as introduce animals.  In each of these units the children will sort plants or animals by similar characteristics.  The children will also match baby animals to their parents.

Social Studies – The children have been working on learning their addresses.  They now need to learn their city, county, state, country, and continent.  We will be working on this all spring.  We continue to practice recognizing American symbols such as the bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, Lincoln Memorial,

Washington

Monument

and the White House.

Upcoming Events   Looking ahead to April – The Media Center will have a “Book Swap”.  The children will be allowed to bring in used books that are in good condition and they can trade them for other books brought in by other children.

Be sure to check out the most recent pictures on our web page.

Happy Valentines Day

We enjoyed Valentines activities on Thursday and Friday.  On Thursday,  we graphed candy  hearts.  On Friday, we dipped marshmallows and pretzels in chocolate, decorated cookies, passed out cards and then looked for words we could read on the cards.  In science we have explored how water turns into snow and ice.  We practiced using the vocabulary words "liquid" and "solid".  We used the same vocabulary when describing how the chocolate turned from a solid to a liquid and then back to a solid.

Fire Fighters visit Bells Ferry

Two fire fighters visited us on Feb. 13.  We saw what clothing fire fighters wear to stay safe.  They talked to us about exiting a burning house and having a "meeting place" outside of your home.  We learned about the importance of having working smoke detectors.  Please check your smoke detectors and have practice fire drills with your children.  We also reviewed "stop, drop, and roll".

Class News Feb. 2, 2009

Thank you for coming to conferences.  I enjoyed visiting with you and showing you your child’s remarkable progress since August.

Upcoming events:

Wednesday, Feb. 4, is an early release day.  The teachers will have professional training time.  The children will be released at 12:20.

Valentines Day:

We will not be having a Valentine’s Day party.  The children will be exchanging valentine cards on Friday, Feb. 13. Please have your child bring in 13 valentine cards.  To make the exchange easier, please do not put other children’s names on the outside of the envelopes.  Your child does need to print their name on the back of each card.

Math:

We will be working very hard on adding coins to 30 cents.

For example:  30 pennies; 3 dimes, or 6 nickels

We have already been working on counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s.  Now we will begin to practice counting by 5’s.

We will also continue working on “fair trades”.

For example:  5 pennies can be traded for 1 nickel

10 pennies can be traded for 1 dime

2 nickels can be traded for 1 dime

Language Arts:

We are continuing to practice writing three sentences.  The children will be putting spaces in between the words and periods at the end of each sentence.  We will also practice beginning each sentence with a capital letter.

Please remember to have your child practice their words on the ring.  The more often they practice, the better they will be at using these words when writing sentences.

Social Studies:

American symbols and Monuments will be the focus for February.  We will be learning about the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell, our flag, the

Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Statue of Liberty.

Look at our website soon for pictures from the 100th Day of School.  We had a great time making headbands, estimating 100 cubes and chain links, drawing ourselves at 100 years old, and guessing how we would spend $100.
