Welcome to Mrs. McCreary's class blog!  I am so excited to be at Bells Ferry this year to work with you and your children.

Check the blog for information and updates throughout the school year.  Newsletters will be published here, as well as any other important information that I would like you to have on a daily/weekly basis.  Check out the different pages to the left for additional websites and information to help your child have a great year in Second Grade!

Newsletter January 23-27

What are we learning?

In this section of the Newsletter, I will list some Essential Questions that your child should be able to answer by the end of the week.  This can help you to ask specific questions so that your child can tell you what he/she is learning in school!

 

Language Arts/Reading

  • How do I become a great reader?
    • § Identifying and using nonfiction features and structures (continued)
  • How do I make sense of text?
  • How can I use letter sound knowledge and spelling patterns to decode? (diphthongs:  ou, ow)

 

Writing

  • How can I become a great writer?
  • How do I write to inform?

 

Math

  • Math facts – Practice Math Facts on FirstinMath.com and myskillstutor.com!!
  • How can I show, identify, and compare fractions?
  • How can I add and subtract 3 digit numbers with regrouping?

 

Social Studies

  • How can I describe the contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr.?

 

Science

  • How do the Earth, Sun, moon, and stars relate to each other?

 

 

Spelling Words

Our spelling words are five high frequency words and five words that fit the spelling rule we are studying in our Words Their Way.  Study the words all week, and be ready for a test on Friday!

AR – Model Classroom

Our class has earned Renaissance Certification for Accelerated Reader!  In order to achieve this status, every student in our class had to set goals in AR, achieve those goals, and maintain a score of 85% or above for comprehension.  You should be very proud of your child for contributing to the success of our class in earning this certification! 

 

First in Math

Our class is still in 9th place for First in Math at Bells Ferry, but we are so close to 8th place!!  Keep earning those stickers and let’s aim for the top 5!

Cold Weather

Please be sure that your child wears a coat/jacket to school when the weather is cold, and that it is labeled with your child’s name.  We try to go outside every day (unless it is TOO cold)!

Stevi B's Night is TONIGHT!!!

 Pizza stevie b'sBells Ferry Elementary Fundraiser        Wednesday, January 11th, 4-9 PM

STEVI B’S pizza will give us $1 for each person who comes to eat pizza!!!

When you arrive to Stevi B’s after school, let the cashier know you are from BFES and your child’s teacher’s name to be counted towards a pizza party!

Winter Break

I hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation.  I was glad to see everyone’s smiling faces again this morning.

First in Math

Our class is ranked in 12th place in the entire school for First in Math.  Let’s try to play and earn LOTS of stickers so we can move into the top 10!

 


General Information

  • Please send in a snack every day for your 2nd grader.
  • Water bottles are permitted only (no juice boxes/sports drinks in the classroom)… spills cause critters!!!!
  • ALWAYS REMEMBER… please send a note for any afternoon dismissal changes!
  • Remember to read each night and log it on your reading log.

Homework

There is no homework packet for this week.  Please continue to read each night for 20 minutes and use the extra time to practice math facts on First in Math (www.firstinmath.com). 

 

End of the Quarter Assessments:

It is very important that your 2nd grader be at school and on time every day this week. We are still learning every day, and there are many reading, writing and math assessments before the winter break! Thanks for your help in this matter.

 

Holiday Party

You are invited to our Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 21 from 1:00-2:00.  We have been working on a mini-musical for your entertainment.  Then, we will decorate cookies and have some party snacks.  We hope you can make it!
