Welcome to February!

I wanted to pass along some additional things that we have been working on in the classroom. On the report card this nine weeks children are required to learn how to write their last name, and be able to repeat their street address including city, state and country. Unfortunately, in past years we have had children in upper grades that are not able to complete this task. I cannot stress enough how important it is for your children to know this information! Please help your children learn their address.

I am asking all parents to have their children practice writing sentences – even silly ones - using their sight words. This is the fabulous way for childen to be able to recognize/practice thieir sight words. It also helps with sentence structure.

Help! We are in desperate need of glue sticks. Our supply has almost run out. I am asking each child to donate 2 or 3 glue sticks to get us through the end of the year.

January is already almost over!

It seems like it just began!

Our 100th day of school is this Friday! Yes, I said this Friday! It looks as though our snack is not going to be very filling. We haven’t gotten a lot of items to make our 100 day snack. If you can, please send your donations in with your child by Friday.

We have been very busy learning our days of the week, seasons, holidays and months of the year. We will be reviewing our coins as well as learning about the quarter. Our unit on Martin Luther King is also finished. For the next couple of weeks we will learn about rocks and soils. In the computer lab, we have been learning how to put images and text into a word document.

 If your child has access to a computer at home, ask them to show you what they know. I will continue to check sight word progress on Fridays. All of the students should be able to use their sight words to make sentences. This will help increase their word recognition, reading ability, comprehension and fluency – all of the things that make great readers!

Welcome to 2012!

 I hope your holiday season was successful and restful! Thanks to our room mom for an awesome holiday party. We had lots of parents that came to help decorate the gingerbread houses. I am still working at getting the pictures emailed to you. All of the kids had a blast! Mrs. Hart and I did too! It’s a couple of days into the New Year and things are already abuzz! It is the start of the third – Yes, I said third nine weeks! Can you believe it?! Your child’s first half of their first year of school is over. Report cards are coming home on Friday! During the nine weeks we will be celebrating our 100th day of school. There will be more info coming home closer to that special February date! In math, we are starting the nine weeks by learning a new song. It’s for the quarter: “Quarter, quarter big and bold, you’re worth twenty five, I am told.” In science, we will be studying rocks and soils. We will be studying the character traits of a good leader as well as Martin Luther King in Social Studies. Our computer lab time will be spent learning how to put images and text into a word document. So please continue to practice those sight words. Cobb County policy states: If the temperature is below 40 degrees it’s too cold for children to be outside for recess. January typically means a lot of indoor recess but the weather lately has been very unpredictable so please make sure your children are appropriately dressed.



Exciting News!!! For the remainder of the school year, we will be introducing a star traveler (student of the week) starting next week. Our star traveler will come home Friday with a letter with instructions and poster to be filled out and returned on Monday of the following week.


